Goal

To provide differentiation through small group guided reading lessons to our 1st grade students using the Literacy Footprints Kits by Jan Richardson and the structure from the Next Steps in Guided Reading.

What will be done with my students

Students' reading capabilities will be assessed with the Jan Richardson Assessment Kit and students will be grouped according to their similarities in data. The teacher will plan lessons based on the needs of students in the areas of word study, comprehension, and writing. Teachers will use the tools and the leveled readers in the Literacy Footprints Kit to engage readers in meaningful tasks and through interesting text specific to their current reading level.

Benefits to my students

Students significantly grow as readers in first grade. This kit will provide teachers with tools, text, tips, suggestions, and a structure to help enhance not only the skill of reading but the love of reading. The kit is designed to help teachers make purposeful decisions about their learners and minimizes the time spent planning. The tools are researched based and designed to engage students in the process of learning to read and growing as readers at their own pace. It helps teachers reach readers right where they are and plan a strategic road map to their individual success.

Describe the Students

We are a Title 1 school with a decreasing Title 1 budget. Our classrooms consist of ESOL, ESE, and a wide range of learners with varying strengths and weaknesses. In first grade we have non-readers who are still learning their alphabet as well as students already reading on a 3rd grade reading level. We meet with ALL of our students in small group guided reading several times a week (if not more).

Budget Narrative

The request is for a Literacy Footprints Kit (plus shipping). The kit will give us 6 books of each title (130 titles), a suggested lesson plan for each title, and teaching tools needed for groups of 6. This kit will help provide differentiation from Level A to Level K.
