My goal is to take 11th grade US History students to the Florida Holocaust Museum during the week of Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 2019. There, they will view the museum artifacts with the assistance of a docent. In the process, they will come away with a greater understanding of the impact of the Holocaust. Also, since many of my students have never visited a museum, this will expand their horizons and give them a new experience.

Goal

My goal is to take 11th grade US History students to the Florida Holocaust Museum during the week of Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 2019. There, they will view the museum artifacts with the assistance of a docent. In the process, they will come away with a greater understanding of the impact of the Holocaust. Also, since many of my students have never visited a museum, this will expand their horizons and give them a new experience.

What will be done with my students

This will be a full day event. First, we will meet before embarking to the Holocaust Museum. Donuts and juice will be provided. The museum is approximately 45 minutes by bus. When we get there, we will be escorted through the museum by a trained docent, who will guide the students through the exhibits. By the time we return to school, lunch will be over, therefore we will have a pizza party, to not only feed the students but to give them an opportunity to process what they learned that day and to decompress from the very difficult subject matter.

Benefits to my students

This field trip will address Florida Standard SS.912.A.6.3 "Analyze the impact of the Holocaust during World War II on Jews as well as other groups". The students will have a greater understanding of the Holocaust and will view artifacts and exhibits that detail the events.

An additional benefit is that many of my students have never visited a museum. This field trip will not only increase their knowledge of the Florida standards, but also expand their horizons and introduce them to new experiences.

Describe the Students

Approximately 62% of the students at Clearwater High School receive free/reduced lunch. About 10% are ESOL students. Approximately 1/3 of the students in my classes have passed the Florida Standards Assessment in English/Language Arts as required for graduation.

Budget Narrative

The museum charges $7 per person for field trip groups. We will have 45 students and 5 chaperones. The bus charges $50/hour and the trip will be approximately 5 hours from pick-up to drop off. I've also included breakfast and lunch.
