Goal

Replacing traditional classroom seating with Node Workstations will allow more freedom in collaboration and increase student engagement through more flexible means of participation.

What will be done with my students

Student desks, chairs and gathering area seating will all be replaced with Node Workstations. The workstations are individual chairs with attached desk surfaces. The workstations are on casters, allowing for easy movement and enabling students to cluster their desks into collaborative groups, or transition with their seats to the gathering area. With this furniture, the classroom will easily transform from whole class instruction to small groups or independent practice zones.

Benefits to my students

The workstations will allow more flexibility in the classroom by freeing up floor space, thus making it easier for students to move around the room. The engagement levels will increase with the increased opportunity for students to regroup according to needs and abilities. Language skills and social skills will improve because of the increased opportunities for collaboration.

Describe the Students

This class is made up of an average of 12 students each year who remain in this class for at least grades 3-5. It is a self-contained ESE classroom of students working on Access Points. The children all have significant cognitive impairments. Physical disabilities include Seizure Disorders, Brain Injuries, Deaf, Blind, Cerebral Palsy, ADHD, Schizophrenia, and Autism. Currently, 80% of the students come from low income families and are on Medicaid. 33% of the students are from families whose primary language is not English.

Budget Narrative

This grant will fund 5 of the 11 Node Chairs needed to furnish the Intermediate Supported Varying Exceptionalities classroom. The chairs are $451 each with shipping included and no taxes. An additional $245 is being requested to be combined with funds already acquired through classroom adoptions in an effort to purchase a 6th chair.
