The goal is to use hands-on learning to teach the anatomy of the eye. I teach students with visual impairments about their eye condition. I currently use pictures on computers to teach the different parts of the eye and to help students understand which part of their eye is affected. A model of the eye that the student can take apart and manipulate will provide a better understanding of the eye, especially for our totally blind students.

Goal

The goal is to use hands-on learning to teach the anatomy of the eye. I teach students with visual impairments about their eye condition. I currently use pictures on computers to teach the different parts of the eye and to help students understand which part of their eye is affected. A model of the eye that the student can take apart and manipulate will provide a better understanding of the eye, especially for our totally blind students. 

 

What will be done with my students

My students have goals on their IEP’s addressing self-determination. The anatomy of the eye can best be taught to the visually impaired with a hands-on approach. The instruction will include learning about the various parts of the eye and their function, taking apart and putting back together the model of the eye, and individualized by learning about the specific part of their eye that is affected by their visual diagnosis. 

 

Benefits to my students

The benefit of this hands-on learning for my students is gaining a greater understanding of their visual impairment. They need to understand about their vision loss so they can process the emotional loss. They need this understanding so they can explain to teachers and their peers about their vision. They need to understand so they can participate more fully in their eye exams. Lastly, my students need to be able to advocate for themselves in their school environment and community so they can lead independent lives and understanding their vision loss is key to that self-advocacy. On the application I wrote these materials will impact three students. It is truly many more. Currently, I have three students on my caseload that are learning about their visual impairment. However, my caseload changes and new students are added. I work with other great teachers of the visually impaired that could use the eye model and I would be happy to share. I believe many students across the county would benefit from this tactual model of the eye. 

 

Describe the Students

I am an itinerant teacher and I teach K-12. All of my students have an IEP. I work with students of all levels. I believe the model of the eye can be used with all my students across all grade levels.  

 

Budget Narrative

The items requested are a model of the human eye, including the optic nerve, which is involved in many of my students' visual impairments and two eye charts that are more in depth for our low vision students.
