Goal

Students will be able to interpret an artistic design and transfer the artistic vision into practical construction. Students will learn to read working drawings and make accurate measurements of lumber to construct the scenic elements for school theatrical productions.

What will be done with my students

Students will be given an artistic rendering and working drawings. From these documents they will create cut lists for lumber to build the elements of the set. Students will track the necessary lumber for the project and measure and cut all pieces required for assembly. Then they will build all of the scenic elements for the production.

Benefits to my students

These materials give students the tools for projects allowing them to learn to measure accurately, in a practical, engaging, hands on environment. They learn to work collaboratively in groups. Students are encouraged to problem solve and discover how to maximize material use and keep budget in mind. These tools will allow this project to continue for many years in the technical theatre classroom. These are real world skills that students will need outside of the classroom.
