The goals for this project include goals for not only the students but also for the faculty at North Shore Elementary. As a school we look for ways to provide enrichment to all students. We also look for those strengths in students that are not always seen in a classroom setting. North Shore Elem. is a Title One school. Taking field trips, which is one way to provide enriching experiences, is often cost prohibitive for the majority of North Shore students. HoPS, Hands on Problem Solving, is an exciting and educational opportunity that comes to your school! It also provides teachers an opportunity to observe their students in a different learning environment.

Another goal of this project is to provide students with the skills necessary for test success. HoPS stresses careful reading and following of written and verbal directions precisely and emphasizes the thinking skills necessary for test taking. HoPS also addresses frustration levels and how to deal with stress

Obj. 1: Students will use creative and critical problem solving skills.
Obj. 2: Students will cultivate effective interactive teamwork.
Obj. 3: Students will improve critical and comprehensive reading skills.
Obj. 4: Teachers will observe their students and look for critical and creative thinking, leadership, etc.

What will be done with my students

Classroom teachers place their students in teams of 3-5. By grade level the students will attend a 2 hour in school field trip. When they arrive at the Media Center, the HoPS staff will explain the activities and then the competition begins! The teams rotate around 4 highly structured, creative, exciting, intellectually challenging and thought provoking activities. The activities are carefully designed to encourage creative safe and non-threatening risk-taking . As a team they must solve 4 very different and very challenging problems. HoPS stresses careful reading and following of written and verbal directions precisely and emphasizes the thinking skills necessary for test success!
