The goal for this request is to assist our first grade students to be able to incorporate project based learning with the use of new technology applications. The students will need items for the development of algebraic thinking, measurement, and graphing in order to journal and record their observations. First graders need to learn the basics of mathematics. With the combination of technology based lessons and hands on materials such as scales, balances, measuring tools (standard and metric), place value knowledge, as well as learning the organization techniques of journaling, our first grade students will be well on their way to success in understanding concepts and strategies needed for successful project based learning. Analyzing graphs and inclusion of non-fiction informational text is important for students in identifying non-fiction text features.

What will be done with my students

The students will be learning foundational strategies in reading, math, science and social studies. Project based learning will allow the students to choose a project, research, use measuring materials for observing, graphing, and recording data. Informational text will be provided to demonstrate what facts are essential when putting research together. This includes the answers to who, what, where, when and how questions. Understanding the calendar and the hundreds chart builds number sense which is connected to real world activities such as engineering, money, and time. Students will gain organizational skills when recording data in journals and IPADS. This will bridge the use of reading, writing and technology. Math balances are a fabulous illustration of algebraic thinking where the students experiment to find solutions to problems. This transfers over to using balances for comparing items.

Benefits to my students

Our first grade students need to have the optimal understanding of number sense. This will be done with the use of hands on manipulatives incorporated with the use of IPAD applications.
Our first grade students will be able to ask a question, research, predict, hypothesize, analyze and draw a conclusion. They will achieve this by observing, predicting, talking and writing about it and then explaining it. These are the baby steps for using the Scientific Method. These items will provide understanding through cross curriculum in reading, math and science, connecting to real world applications.

Describe the Students

The population of our first grade students is diverse in culture, (African American, Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Mixed) socioeconomic backgrounds and student exceptionalities. We have a combination of low and high performing students, speech and language impaired and autism disorders. We are proud to serve all children and families.

Budget Narrative

Gulf Beaches Elementary Magnet School is developing as a technology magnet in a school location that has been vacant for six years. As a first grade team we have left manipulatives, books and supplies at our former Title One Schools. We are starting from scratch and need these tools to accommodate the technology that the students will be learning on their IPADS. Reading and writing is still imperative for personalized and blended learning, but having the hands on manipulatives will allow the students to analyze reading and explore ideas and curriculum through the use of the items listed.
