Goal

My goal is to increase my knowledge of how to best meet the needs of my students by taking the Advancing Thinking Through Writing K-2 training. In addition, I would like to begin using the UFLI foundations phonics program to increase my students' decoding and encoding skills. This will lead to more fluent reading and writing.  

 

What will be done with my students

I will use the UFLI Foundations program for small, differentiated reading groups daily. This program is systematic, explicit and meets the needs of all students.

I will also use the knowledge learned in the professional development course to teach my students writing strategies and skills. This course will teach me effective ways to scaffold and differentiate for my students. I will also lead professional learning communities with my teammates to share the information gained during the course.

The card packs will be used for our Graham Fletcher routine. They will be used in small groups to practice their number facts in a fun way while thinking strategically. 

 

Benefits to my students

My students' phonics knowledge will improve through the use of UFLI Foundations. They will increase their decoding and encoding fluency and mastery. Students will leave first grade as successful readers!

The math cards will allow my students to build their math fact fluency in a fun, engaging manner through the use of games.

The writing course will allow me to teach and implement explicit strategies so that all of my students can be successful in writing. These strategies will also build reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. The strategies learned will be implement across all content areas (math, science, social studies, & ELA).  

 

Describe the Students

I have a class of 18 hardworking, curious students. My students include students with autism, students who receive language and/or speech therapy, ESOL students, as well as gifted students. I teach at a Title One school, so many students are on free and reduced lunch.
