Goal

To provide assistive technology items to students with developmental disabilities to support access to communication systems and a variety of learning activities.

What will be done with my students

Purchasing of the Functionalhands will allow students with physical limitations a modified way to access everyday classroom items anywhere from different sized writing utensils, a water bottle during mealtime/teaching independent functioning skills, a toothbrush during self-hygiene instruction, etc.
Purchasing of the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 will allow students with physical impairments and/or visual impairments an adapted way to access their computer classrooms. The Tobii eye tracker supports students' visual access to touch-screen computers (when the student is physical unable to touch the screen) and allows their teachers to see where a student's eye gaze is in any given moment (can serve as a mode of response when the student is unable to verbal or physical point to something).
Purchasing of iPad cases with hand and shoulder straps will allow our students who are currently using iPads as an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device (in place of or to support verbal speech) to carry their AAC around school and free their hands to be able to perform other educational tasks while still having nearby access to their communication system.

Benefits to my students

Modified access to educational tools; adapted access to classroom computers; efficient access to communication devices.

Describe the Students

ESE students in grades K-12 with significant cognitive disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and/or other developmental disabilities. 50% of our school includes students with multiple disabilities, including physical limitations, visual impairments, and hearing impairments. Therefore, access to assistive technology is necessary for our students to access everyday classroom items.
