Goal

Students are cultivating a vegetable garden. This is a student led, landscape architectural project. The garden will be used to provide fresh vegetables for any student that wishes to have it.

What will be done with my students

We've already had the space mowed to clear it for tilling. The irrigations system that is currently installed is underrated for the space. Students will remove it and install an accurately sized irrigation system. They will till the land. Place barriers in the appropriate locations. They will cultivate a new vegetable garden that will also include space to propagate wildflowers. The vegetables will be available to any student wishing to have access to fresh vegetables. The wildflowers will be used to continue the propagation of native landscapes that attract natural species to the Seminole High School campus (e.g., butterflies, birds, squirrels, etc.).

Benefits to my students

The gardens created at Seminole High School are offering valuable teaching experiences that cultivate the potential in every student to thrive as a global citizen by inspiring a love of learning, encouraging civic engagement, challenging and supporting every student to achieve academic excellence, while embracing the full richness and diversity of our community. Many of the educators at Seminole High School have engaged students in activities relating to the gardens: biology and its relationship, language arts and writing in prose that reflects their interpretation of nature, visual arts in providing aesthetic additions to the gardens (such as Japanese lanterns that are currently being built). The Landscape Architectural Project are student-run, provide practical, hands-on experiences in farming and gardening, business management, community relations, and nature observation. To date, we have had approximately 8 teachers join in with teaching with respect to the gardens. There are 70 students actively involved in maintaining and cultivating the gardens every week. The entire student body (2,000 students) have access to the gardens. And, the STEAM Program uses the gardens to teach cross-curricular connections of environmental sustainability as they relate to science, engineering, math, the Arts, and related technologies.

Describe the Students

receiving reduced price lunches. Academically, Math proficiency and Reading proficiency fall below benchmarks, at 39% and 49% respectively. Students measuring mastery in Math and Reading based on the Florida Standard Assessment (FSA) and Mathematics End of Course Exams (EOC) is 35.7%. When we disaggregate the data further, the percentage of underserved student proficiency is 32.4%, while the counter grouping percentage of student proficiency is 46.7%. Furthermore, this underserved student percentage gap is exacerbated when compared to the State of Florida levels, where SHS falls below 10% from the average.

While these trends malign a difficult image, growth from the previous year’s results continue to improve over each successive quarter. Additionally, the educators and professionals at Seminole High School are dedicated to elevating their students through reducing and eliminating the achievement gap, while improving overall academic success for all students. This plan provides an analysis of student demographics, achievement goals, and the School Improvement Plan (SIP), as well as provides a meaningful process to assist in elevating student success while improving the overall, equitable access to education.
