Many families in Pinellas County are experiencing food insecurity; they don't know where their next meal is coming from. Feeding our students who are in desperate need will not only help them be better able to learn but will also alleviate the stress and anxiety associated with with food insecurity. The PCS Pantry is unique in that school social workers bring the food to the families and removes an additional barrier that many families face, lack of transportation or inability to get to an open pantry outside of their work schedule. This Pantry will also link families to needed resources to work on solving the challenges that created food insecurity in the first place.
The PCS Pantry will be established at a mid county student services center that will have a variety of foods that social workers can pick up and deliver to students and their families. Resource information will also be provided to help families develop solutions to their food needs.
Students and their families will experience relief from hunger as well as resources to help solve the problem of food insecurity.
Any student that a school social worker identifies as having food insecurity in their home will be eligible for food from the Pantry.
The entire budget will go to pantry food. Shelves have already been purchased to properly store food.
