Goal

My goal is for my first grade students to increase reading and writing skills by using highly engaging handheld technology in the classroom on a regular basis. LeapPad Ultra tablets and apps will be used for several years in my first grade classroom.

What will be done with my students

Students will use LeapPad Ultra handheld tablets in rotating classroom literacy centers individually or in partnerships, 2-4 students at a time. They will interact with reading and writing apps to support Language Arts skills taught in alignment with Florida Core Standards. The use of kid-friendly handheld technology will enhance their levels of engagement, willingness to learn as well as increasing their academic skills.

Benefits to my students

Students will interact with kid-friendly technology at their individual skill levels, increasing their reading and writing skills at higher levels of engagment. Today's students are enthusiastic about interacting with technology versus paper/pencil tasks. Students will be offered more opportunities to integrate technology into their learning. Many of my students do not have access to the internet or use of technology tools at home, so this will increase their technology skills as well as their reading and writing skills. This is a more affordable alternative to cost-prohibitive laptops or ipads.

Describe the Students

Last year my class was 78% economically disadvantaged (on free/reduced lunch) and majority African American and/or Hispanic. Many students lacked resources (ie technology) at home to enhance their literacy skills. Many were struggling readers and writers with parents who themselves struggled with illiteracy or English was not their native language. Basic transportation was challenging for many families, so going to a library or staying after school for internet access was difficult for them.
