My goal is for students to become independent readers and love reading. The end of kindergarten reading goal is to be a Level D reader. I want students to love reading and feel success by providing them with books on their level to read independently. After reading the research of the Science of Reading, I realize that students need more opportunities with decodable books to become independent readers. Right now, I do not have enough decodable books to match the students' reading needs. This project will be able to be replicated year after year providing support for many beginning readers.

Goal

My goal is for students to become independent readers and love reading. The end of kindergarten reading goal is to be a Level D reader. I want students to love reading and feel success by providing them with books on their level to read independently. After reading the research of the Science of Reading, I realize that students need more opportunities with decodable books to become independent readers. Right now, I do not have enough decodable books to match the students' reading needs. This project will be able to be replicated year after year providing support for many beginning readers.

What will be done with my students

Through this project, I would like to purchase multiple levels of decodable readers. I need alphabet and simple readers for my struggling readers. I would need higher skilled decodables such as blends and more complex vowels for my higher readers. I would need some basic short vowel decodable readers for my on-track readers. For this project, I would sort these books in my classroom so students will have access to them and use them on a daily basis. After teaching explicit phonics skills through small group and whole group instruction, students will then practice reading independently using these decodable readers that match the phonics skill taught. Every day, students will have opportunities to read decodable books and gain confidence in being a reader. Students will also be able to take these books home to practice reading with their families and demonstrate the skills they are learning.

Benefits to my students

Decodable books are books that can be decoded once the phonics skills have been taught. When students are able to decode or read books on their own something magical happens and they want to read everything. Sometimes learning to read will take that spark away because students get frustrated trying to read books that don't match their skill level. By providing these types of decodable books to beginning readers, they will be able to successfully read books creating positive experiences with reading. This will boost their confidence and create a love for reading. When students practice reading books that match their reading needs daily, they will become more fluent with reading and want to read. The benefit of this additional reading practice is students' scores will increase in all reading areas including phonics skills and reading level.

Describe the Students

I teach in a Title 1 school where most of the students come from families that are economically disadvantaged. My classroom is full of 17 kindergarten students that have a love for learning. I have a very diverse class with 3 African Americans, 4 Hispanic, 2 Multi-Racial, and 8 Caucasians. Of those 17, 2 students have exceptional education plans and 2 students do not have English as their primary language. Academically, I have 5 students that are currently performing below grade level. I have 4 high performers that are performing above grade level and 7 students right at grade level.

Budget Narrative

For this project, I would need 1 set of Pre-K Decodable books that include books to support letter recognition and phonemic awareness. These books would be used to support my students that are below level. I would need 1 set of Kindergarten Decodable books that include books to support reading CVC words with short vowels. These books would be used to support my on-level students. I would also need 1 set of 1st grade decodable readers that include books to practice reading digraphs, beginning, and ending blends. These would be used to support my higher-level readers. I have added the cost of shipping and handling estimated to ship from the company Just Right Reader. These materials will be added to the classroom library and used by all the students in this class and future classes.
