Goal

Midtown Academy - Center for Cultural Arts, Gifted Studies, and Literacy Innovation - is continuing to grow the Cultural Arts program. As we expand our program, I am requesting funds to purchase additional, hands-on, curriculum. Purposeful Pathways provides students from Kindergarten through 5th Grade with meaningful lessons that encourage creativity, improvisation, and student choice.

“Purposeful Pathways: Possibilities for Elementary Music Classrooms” is an extensive collection of curricular materials for learning music by making music. Based on the philosophies of Orff Schulwerk, Kodály, and eurhythmics, this collection of developmentally sequenced learning activities offers elementary general music educators diverse choices for how to present folk song from diverse cultures and original material, including lessons in singing, literacy, movement, improvisation, composition, and instrumental ensemble. Each lesson is a collection of learning pathways, to be selected by the teacher, that unfold over time offering possibilities for differentiated instruction and flexibility in diverse classroom settings. This flexible design makes this resource helpful to all teachers, first year to seasoned educators! 

 

What will be done with my students

Because students at Midtown Academy attend music class twice a week, we have the opportunity to expose students to additional music making and creative opportunities. This additional curriculum provides students with the opportunity to have more meaningful pathways to improvisation, creativity, and music making with student voice.  

 

Benefits to my students

Students will become stronger musicians with the ability to make and justify creative decisions, build improvisation skills, and collaborate with classmates. With Midtown Academy's diverse student population, our students attend music in mixed groups across all of our programs. Curriculum like "Purposeful Pathways" allows all of our students to succeed and grow as musicians and learners. This curriculum has a heavy emphasis on rhymes, literature, and poetry - lending itself to the needs of each of our students.  

 

Describe the Students

Midtown Academy - located in South St. Petersburg - has a unique student population. Our student body encompasses gifted students, students needing support in reading, and students with an interest in the cultural arts. While these students are in home room classes by program, they attend music classes in mixed groups. These mixed groups allow students to collaborate and allows each student to bring his or her strengths to the group while learning from others.  

 

Budget Narrative

Purchasing all 4 levels of this curriculum with the paired digital manipulative CD for each will give all students at Midtown Academy access to this enriching curriculum.
