I would utilize these Grant Funds to create an interactive Animal Research Station Library for our PK-2 students. The goal is to encourage early literacy with nonfiction titles.
One of the most popular nonfiction genres is animals. This Grant would provide Primary students access to grade level non-fiction library texts that are targeted to their interests and reading level. Students will have the opportunity to choose high interest books specifically curated for this grade-band. In Elementary, many animal nonfiction titles skew higher because of state standard habitat projects that occur in 3rd and 4th grade. Students will have the opportunity to peer read with reading "stations" that can be checked out by the teacher.
This Project, if funded, would have a direct impact on student literacy gains in early Primary. Students who have early access to nonfiction are more likely to develop analytical skills and problem-solving strategies. Students will increase their understanding of text features and the differences between fact and opinion.
