Goal

My goal is to enhance the guidance curriculum so I can provide more meaningful lessons for my students.

What will be done with my students

I would like to implement a mindfulness curriculum within my guidance lessons. I started last year by reading a mindfulness book and my students LOVED it. I would like to improve that by adding yoga mats and the mega sphere breathing ball. This would be included in one of my spring guidance lessons. This lesson was a big hit last year, so I would love to continue it on a yearly basis. I would pair my book, soothing music with some easy yoga / stretches. Each student would have their own yoga mat so that they can have their own space, and the yoga / stretching is completed in a safe way.

I would also like to teach team building, in order to improve the school climate. I have seen firsthand how impactful team building is, and how it can truly make a difference. I would like to use the large parachute, the 2 person parachutes, and the memory maze in my guidance lessons. I feel the 2 different parachutes will give me the opportunity to work with all age ranges (PK - 5) and it will also allow me to work on a relationship between 2 people as well as relationships between multiple students / the entire class / grade. The memory maze would help me to build trust and team work within the whole class. This would especially be useful with our gifted classes. These team building activities are important because we use restorative practice at my school. Restorative practice is about building relationships based on trust and understanding. Teambuilding helps to break down barriers between people. With the barriers gone, trust and understanding are built. I feel that when the students are able to understand each other and communicate with each other, then the school climate will be improved. With that, academics will soar, as well. This guidance lesson can be done yearly, but also as needed.

Benefits to my students

The benefits to my students would result in higher academic achievement, more school enjoyment, feelings of being safe in school, building / strengthening relationships, improving self - esteem, encourage students to be in touch with their emotions, use of coping skills, communication, reading body language. We have seen some negative results from the pandemic, (decline in social skills, difficult reading facial expressions and body language, trouble verbalizing emotions, trouble communicating) and by enhancing my guidance lessons with these items, I feel that the skills that have not been built due to the pandemic (and other reasons too) can be built at a more faster and stronger rate. Every student in the school would benefit from this and it will enhance the teacher's bond with their students as well. A desired outcome is a safe space is created for the students and the teacher. I would like to purchase yoga mats from Amazon (about $10 per mat) to start a yoga / mindfulness curriculum.

Describe the Students

I have the opportunity to work with the whole school (338 students). We have 5 ASD classes - including 2 ASD pre -k. We have 3 more VPK & Pre-k 3 classes, as well as k - 5th. We have a gifted program & a talent development program. We have students in ESE, a LLI program (students pulled to increase academics) and a RAP program (similar to LLI).

Budget Narrative

I would like to purchase yoga mats from Amazon (about $10 per mat) to start a yoga / mindfulness curriculum. I would like to purchase a hoberman mega sphere to enhance the yoga / mindfulness curriculum: https://www.belk.com/p/hoberman-hoberman-mega-sphere---spectrum/0438693218660.html?feed=shopping

I would like to purchase the sportime gripstarchute parachute with 36 handles 35 ft, the sportime 2 -person parachute 33 x 50 in, set of 6, and the everlast memory maze to implement more teambuilding lessons into my guidance curriculum. Having the range of parachute sizes will allow me to reach each age range of the students at my school. The memory maze will do the same. The memory maze will also be utilized for team building, and would enhance team building for 4th, 5th grade and gifted students.
