The goal is to provide a wide variety of seating and learning environments for students to achieve. Goal

The goal is to provide a wide variety of seating and learning environments for students to achieve. For some, the alternative seating will be an award for achieving a goal, for others a necessity to help with ADHD, ASD, or other impairments that make a non-flexible learning environment an impediment to their learning.

What will be done with my students

This grant is for universal designed seating and learning environments that will benefit students throughout our school (PreK - 5th). Students will be provided with a variety of choices in their seating to help them feel more comfortable in their learning environment, stay engaged, and allow for movement that is not disruptive to the classroom. Wobble cushions for circle learning time at the carpet, swivel chair for cooperative learning projects, and independent floor desks that allow our ASD students the ability to rock and write their math problems out at the same time.

Benefits to my students

We hope to develop learning environments that meet the needs of each student in our school. From typically developing students who met a learning goal, to a student with autism who cannot function without movement, to the hyperactive student that just needs that thirty minutes of movement while working to get through the day. Each student finds a positive way to keep learning and continue to be an important part of our learning family. While building their knowledge the flexible work environment builds their ability to self-regulate and take control of their learning, increases their ability to stay focused, makes learning more positive for them, and builds their inner sense of self-motivation to take on more learning challenges confidently. We are supported by many local Applied Behavioral Analysis Therapist that work alongside our teachers with our many exceptional needs, Autistic and behaviorally challenged students who agree that universal designed seating and learning environments would be a benefit to these and all students.

Our students having varied emotional, physical, language, and educational needs that are met in varied ways throughout the campus such as whole group, small group, one on one, scaffolding, pull out and push in services. We have 452 students in PreK through 5th grade. Our student population is blend of many different cultures and races including but not limited to Multiracial, Black, White, Hispanic, Vietnamese, Taiwanese, Japanese, and Russian students.

Budget Narrative

We are exploring with our administrative team and our school based multiple tiered academic and behavior support teams the best seating and learning environment (desks) that would best serve our varied student body. We are confident that $2,500 will give us the best start in obtaining these universal designed alternatives for our students and once funded we will provide an itemized list of these items as a team.
