Level 6 - $576.00
The goal of this grant is to give the gifted scholars of Campbell Park and Fairmount Park Elementary Schools the opportunity to synthesize their learning on Space and Innovation through experiential learning in Science. Scholars will be able to engage in authentic, first-hand, sensory-based learning in a collaborative atmosphere.
First scholars will take an exciting tour of the Solar System in the Saunders planetarium having amazing views of our planet and the denizens of the Kuiper Belt! They will Learn why Mercury is not the hottest planet in the
Solar System and why the exploration of Mars is essential to the future of humans. In addition, scholars will take an adventure on the Sky Trail Ropes Course! This course will build confidence and test their abilities as they face advanced challenges throughout the
three level, 35 element course.
There are too many benefits to list but the most essential and critical benefits to our scholars can be summarized by The Australian Science Teacher’s Journal article on the importance of experiential learning. "It will provide firsthand experience, stimulate interest and motivation in science, add relevance to learning and interrelationships, strengthen observation and perception skills, and promote personal (social) development (Michie, 1998)." In addition, math and science as well as reflective writing scores may improve due to this field trip.
Our scholars are gifted/advance academics students who attend transformational zoned schools. These schools may need additional support to ensure that all students achieve 100% success. Furthermore, both schools are under
The Scale Up for Success Initiative. This initiative is a model of support, designed in collaboration with the Juvenile Welfare Board that focuses on increasing achievement for all students with an emphasis on closing the achievement gap and turning around low-performing schools.
