Many students who are seen as "hyper" or "unfocused" in class are actually exhibiting sensory seeking behaviors. These students are often misdiagnosed and misunderstood in the classroom. We want to take a closer look at these children and learn strategies to help them be more successful in the classroom and later in life.

Goal

Many students who are seen as "hyper" or "unfocused" in class are actually exhibiting sensory seeking behaviors. These students are often misdiagnosed and misunderstood in the classroom. We want to take a closer look at these children and learn strategies to help them be more successful in the classroom and later in life.

What will be done with my students

This is a teacher book study. Teachers will be participating in a group study reading and discussing the book. Teachers will be implementing strategies from the book and supporting each other in their learning. Students will be impacted by the teacher knowledge gained from studying the book. Strategies presented in the book will be used by the teachers to help the students be more successful in the classroom environment.

Benefits to my students

The benefit of this will be an increase in teacher awareness of Sensory Seeking behaviors in the classroom. The use of the strategies will increase on task behavior and student engagement in the classroom. This will result in more successful students and improved assessment results for some of our low achieving students. We will open the book study to 10 interested teachers. This will also help our teachers gain Special Education continuing credits that are now being required by the State Department of Education.

Describe the Students

Lynch Elementary has a high free and reduced lunch population (This year we qualified as a free lunch and breakfast school for all students). We have many students with non-traditional or disrupted home lives. Many of these students do not have strong support systems at home and need extra attention at school.

Budget Narrative

The books will be purchased from Amazon using one of our Amazon Prime accounts. This will allow us to receive the books with free shipping! The books are $10.09 plus tax on Amazon Prime.
