Junior League of St. Petersburg - $950.00
The Mt. Vernon Elementary library is 15 years old and is need of some updating. This will better serve our students and provide them with current and accurate information. In addition to this, it is our goal to have our library reflect the diversity of our school.
Every week, my students come to check out books. They greatly enjoy their library time and reading about a variety of subjects and fictional stories.
Updating the collection will benefit my students greatly because it will provide them with accurate and current information. This is very important as science and technology is constantly changing. Having books that have been published within the last few years would better help my students learn and will give them current knowledge as opposed to knowledge that has drastically changed within the last 15 years. My students are also so thrilled to see themselves portrayed in stories and therefore I feel it's important to have diverse books in the collection.
We are a title one school and serve lower income students. For most, reading books from the library are the only books they have access to, other than in the classroom. They are able to take library books home to share and read with parents. We have students who struggle with reading and feel discouraged. Updating the collection with books that are in current student interest would entice these students and inspire them to improve upon their reading skills.
Our nonfiction and beginning to read books are the most dated. Any amount towards updating our collection is greatly appreciated!
