We have been using the SRA reading program with our students for over 2 years and have seen incredible growth. Our goal is that using this approach in our math instruction will show the same results. Many of the math concepts can often seem abstract, but through direct instruction they will be able to grasp these concepts more readily.

Goal

We have been using the SRA reading program with our students for over 2 years and have seen incredible growth. Our goal is that using this approach in our math instruction will show the same results. Many of the math concepts can often seem abstract, but through direct instruction they will be able to grasp these concepts more readily.

What will be done with my students

Currently the core curriculum program used in our schools is our main resource. However, this curriculum is very language heavy, which causes great difficulty for students with severe language deficits. Students will receive instruction in an explicit, systematic, and intensive way. Using the SMARTboard to display the Connecting Math Concepts program will increase student engagement.

Benefits to my students

Students will be able to receive math instruction in a way that is appropriate for them. In addition, this curriculum in aligned to our Common Core State Standards. Students will be more engaged in their math instruction and will make gains in all areas of math. They will also be able to work on grade level standards in a more concrete way, which will increase their success and independence.

Describe the Students

We teach students with Autism in grades K-5. Many of our students also have language, speech and/or occupational therapy needs. Some of our students have cognitive delays. We have students on both special and standard diploma. Students range in their abilities. Some of our students are verbal and can have full conversations. Other students are nonverbal, speaking very few words or utterances.

Budget Narrative

We are requesting two levels of the SRA Connecting Math Concepts. These will be shared between the K-5 ASD classes. We currently only have level B.
