Goal

The goal of this project is to improve focus and productivity in my classroom through flexible seating and alternative work stations.

What will be done with my students

Students will be given access to flexible seating during the school day. Students will be given the opportunity to sit in a space within the classroom that best allows them to succeed. Students will be accountable for making choices that benefit their education.

Benefits to my students

The benefits of flexible seating are well-established in research and literature. They provide an outlet for excess body energy and opportunity for movement that does not distract others. Traditional school desks are uncomfortable for my students for a variety of reasons; some are outgrowing the elementary school desks and chairs and some have physiological needs that make sitting at a desk challenge.

Moreover, introducing flexible seating into the classroom encourages my students to take responsibility for their own learning. This fosters independence and ownership of their education by giving them choices.

Describe the Students

My students are eager learners who enjoy collaborative and engaging work. They are all extremely responsible, as testified by the fact that over half of my class participate in the Safety Patrol program at our school.

My classroom currently has 21 students, 2 students with IEPs, 1 student with a 504, 2 students in gifted class, 6 students in talented. I have 11 boys and 10 girls.

My classroom demographics as self-reported by the family:
10 White, 7 Hispanic, 3 Asian, 1 Black

Our school is a Title 1 School and our students do receive free/reduced lunch programs. Most students live within the neighborhood.
