Goal

The goal of this project is to increase student engagement by allowing them to move and wiggle during instruction and independent work. 

 

What will be done with my students

Sitting at a desk all day is tough for an active group of 4th graders. My students love the ability to pick their own thinking area to work on their assignments. Having constant movement and flexible seating allows them the opportunity to pick a place where they learn best. Having an easel that moves would provide us with the opportunity to move the center of our learning to places in the room that best work for the topic. It will give us a central location to house anchor charts and give the students a place to practice their knowledge. Providing stools and cushions will give my scholars the opportunity to sit in various places around the room during instruction and independent work.  

 

Benefits to my students

Providing my scholars with the ability to sit on stools designed to wiggle will give them the opportunity to move and balance while working. This will help them focus and keep them engaged. Cushions will give the students the opportunity to sit wherever they like during the day. The chair bands will provide an outlet for those who stay in their seats but need to move their feet. The balance boards will benefit those who need to stand. These tools will allow scholars to move, learn and have fun! 

 

Describe the Students

My scholars are amazing. They love to learn! Each day they come to school ready to give it their all. They come from hard-working families who value education. 57.7% of our school population receives free or reduced lunch. We work hard to maintain a positive classroom culture. Students feel safe, loved and understood in my classroom. My scholars come to school with lots of energy, eager to participate and motivated to do their very best. Last year 88% of my them met or exceeded expectations on the Florida Standards Assessment for math. That number not only exceeded the county's level of proficiency, but the state's as well. I partially attribute this success to my willingness to allow my scholars to learn how they are comfortable, not restricting them to their desks. I would love to continue that with my new group of scholars. I know these tools will help us wiggle towards success!
