Goal

We would like to continue to grow vegetables and herbs to share with members of our school, staff, and students at no cost to them by including more student interaction throughout the grade levels and including a pollination area for bees, bats, hummingbirds and butterflies with a relaxation/therapy area.

What will be done with my students

We will plant seeds, weed, water, and harvest vegetables after getting the ground ready. We will mow the grass areas around the garden areas. We will learn about how to be good gardeners to produce the best plants (when to plant, in what type of soil, where to plant, etc.). We will build an area for pollinators and learn their needs and benefits. We would like to make: decorative/motivational stones for pathways: a couple of benches; a bee hive with plexiglass to see inside. We would also like to cook the food we harvest.

Benefits to my students

To learn the benefits of fresh vegetables-taste, sustainability, and that anyone can grow something! It encourages them to eat healthier. It makes some intuitive sense. ...
It provides engaging, moderate exercise.
It builds a sense confidence.
It develops STEM & analytical abilities.
It relieves stress.
It improves focus & memory.
It positively impacts mood & psychological wellbeing.
It builds team building and other soft skills needed in the workforce.
We will be improving our world and caring about the environment.

Describe the Students

We are a school with students that have emotional and behavioral issues. Some are compounded with low cognitive abilities and/or Autism and/ or mental health issues along with various other diagnoses. We serve grades K- Extended transition.

Budget Narrative

I realize this is a lot, but we have many projects in mind !!! If we can't build a beehive then that would reduce the grant by $425. I am sure there are many expenses I am leaving out, also. Our garden has been a part of the school for many years and needs some desperate sprucing up!!!
