The goal of this project is to obtain ample flexible seating choices for all students to be able to pick and choose what makes them most comfortable and able to focus the most for the highest academic success.
Students will be given flexible seating choices for all areas of their academic day including whole group instruction, small group instruction, and on your own seat work. Students will be taught how to use the flexible seating appropriately to enhance their success and better be able to focus to get through their day.
Flexible seating increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. This not only burns calories and increases metabolism, but also keeps the brain more alert and focused. It helps children stay engaged in the teacher's lesson, group work, or individual work.
Flexible seating teaches students to share and take turns in different locations with the different seating options. This in turn creates a classroom that is more "ours" than "mine".
Flexible seating allows students to collaborate by easily and quickly grouping together without having to move around large, heavy desks. This promotes so much more collaboration than the normal classroom set up that does not have the flexible seating.
Flexible seating can positively impact students as a sensory tool. Sensory tools can help students focus and process information better. Sensory tools are often helpful for students with ADD, ADHD, and ASD.
In today's classroom where we are seeing more and more traumatic behaviors that lend to taking focus away from the whole class, flexible seating is a positive for everyone involved. I also believe flexible seating will help to keep students calm and it will decrease the amount of negative behavior resulting in much more engagement and focus overall.
Our students attend a title 1 school in a general education classroom. Our classes are inclusive and a combination of ELL students, low & high performing students, and ESE students including VE & EBD mainstreamed students.
