We want to provide our students the opportunity to access the general education physical education class by providing adaptive PE equipment. Most of our students do not have the physical ability to fully participate with the physical education equipment, therefore, it is necessary to provide equipment that is adapted to meet their individual needs. We want to ensure that all our students have access to the benefits that physical education brings.

Goal

We want to provide our students the opportunity to access the general education physical education class by providing adaptive PE equipment. Most of our students do not have the physical ability to fully participate with the physical education equipment, therefore, it is necessary to provide equipment that is adapted to meet their individual needs. We want to ensure that all our students have access to the benefits that physical education brings.

What will be done with my students

We will be able to provide adaptive physical education equipment to enhance our students' physical education course and increase their opportunities to participate along with their general education peers. Some of our students have movement delays or physical disabilities that negatively impacts their ability to fully participate in their physical education course. For example, our students do not have the physical strength to be able to shoot the basketball into the regulation hoop. An adapted basketball hoop will increase our students opportunity to make a basket.

Benefits to my students

With the adaptive physical education equipment, our students will increase their physical and social/emotional skills. Our students will increase their overall self-esteem by being able to fully participate with their general education peers. The students will also be able to practice for Special Olympics events.

Describe the Students

We teach students with intellectual disabilities in a self-contained setting. We have students with characteristics on the autistic spectrum, Down Syndrome, physical disabilities, social and emotional disabilities, physical disabilities, and deficits in communication. We must adapt our curriculum to meet the individual needs of all our students while providing them access to the general education curriculum to the maximum extent possible. Our classrooms are also in a Title 1 school. Most of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes with a free/reduced lunch rate of over 80%.
