Goal

Instruct alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) users on communication skills and literacy skills through reading adaptive books and the Core Vocabulary Exchange System (CVES)

What will be done with my students

I will use both Interactive stories along with the Core Vocabulary Exchange System (CVES) to teach language and literacy to AAC users. These special adaptive stories are inclusive for all types of needs.

Benefits to my students

The Interactive Stories are adaptive and helpful for all types of needs. These "easy to use" books have concepts that are easy to understand with bright and colorful graphics that are easy to see, pages that are easy to turn, and text that is easy to follow.
These books are fun-filled and interactive. They feature Picture Communication Symbols© from Mayer-Johnson LLC with key words that are highlighted in red which is great for both typically-developing children and those with special needs. These books used in conjunction with the Core Vocabulary Exchange System (CVES) will allow minimally verbal or non-speaking students to engage with books and communicate and learn through literacy. The CVES is a low-tech, durable, two-way AAC communication platform that incorporates picture exchange and core vocabulary. It was created to help students develop functional communication skills beyond simple requests or labeling, such as "I want" or "I see." CVES may be used as a stand-alone AAC system dedicated to a child, or it may be used as a language teaching tool for children who have some verbal speech. The CVES can be used to help transition a child to verbal speech with extensive use, or as a bridge to a high-tech communication device.
