The goal of this project is to provide students with much needed items to play outside and a cart to store them. The academic demands of first grade have been steadily increasing over several years. The current curriculum is packed with language arts, math, social studies, and science standards. My young students need time to play outside, but it can be difficult when all we have to play in is an open field. My plan is to help my students increase gross motor skills and social skills by playing together enjoying the outdoors. This project will also provide my students a chance to get out some energy in a positive manner hoping that they will then be able to come back into the classroom ready to learn. For young learners some of the most meaningful connections and experiences often happen through play. I believe giving my students these experiences each day will help to create a life long love of learning. The benefits of this project will not only effect first grade students this academic year, but also those for many years to come. All of the materials being purchased are non-consumable therefore it will be easy to repeat this initiative year after year.
All of the materials being purchased through this project will help to make the most out of our time at outdoor recess. I will purchase recess equipment and a cart to store the equipment to give my students the opportunity to play together outside expelling some of their energy while increasing their gross motor, and social skills. The hope is by giving my students the opportunity to play together outdoors they will be ready to come back to class ready to learn.
For young students in first grade it is so beneficial to make meaningful connections and experiences. Often these are made through play. Purchasing the items through this project will make it possible to use recess as a way to give my students a chance to get out some of their energy, work on gross motor skills, and be ready to learn when recess is done.
I work in a Title I school where 100% of the student population receive free breakfast and lunch. I have 20 students who come from very diverse backgrounds. I have several students diagnosed with ADHD and one student on the Autism Spectrum. Forty percent of my students are low performers according to our first round of assessment. My class would really benefit from these items helping them make the most out of their outdoor play.
I will use the budget to purchase recess equipment and a storage cart for the equipment. Currently, we are playing in an open field. These balls and toys will help to give my students an outlet to develop gross motor skills, and social skills. They will also help the students to expel some energy allowing them to come back to class ready to focus and learn.
