Goal

To increase comprehension of science standards from the middle school ESE population that have been quantified as low scoring on the science gap diagnostic assessment compared to their general education peers.

What will be done with my students

Students will be given the GAP diagnostic science assessment to determine a baseline for what standards are the lowest performing. The teacher will then instruct half of the students using inquiry based learning, and the other half will learn through convention l methods during 2nd quarter. They will be assessed and then classes will be switched during the third quarter. Success will then be measured and analyzed during the spring GAP diagnostic at the end of the third quarter.

Benefits to my students

Research suggests that students learn scientific standards successfully while being engaged in inquiry-based, three-dimensional learning . As a Title 1 Alternative ESE Center, there is a lack of science equipment that can be utilized for students to understand complex concepts that diagnostic testing has shown significant gaps with our student population. We would like to propose a project to see if the utilization of immersive lab activities can improve students understanding in science standards that they have scored low in compared to their general education peers.

Describe the Students

Richard L. Sanders is a K-12 alternative ESE Center in Pinellas County serving students with a variety of exceptionalities, such as emotional/behavioral disorders as well as cognitive disorders. All services are available to students on campus which include Speech/Language therapy and Occupational therapy. Richard L. Sanders also services such as behavioral services, psychologists, and specialists to provide opportunities for the students to return to the general education setting. The students at Richard L. Sanders are generally low performing in academics, and require intensive services to be able to be successful in school. There are also some students that live in group or alternative home settings. Richard L. Sanders is also a title 1 school, meaning most students come from low socioeconomic families and qualify for free/reduced lunch.
