The mission of PCSB schools is to prepare each student for college, career, and life. By engaging students in innovative science, technology, engineering and mathematics tasks students can become more prepared for our globally competitive society. The implementation of computer programming in my primary classroom at Starkey Elementary will increase student knowledge in the areas of; coding as a universal language, problem solving, computational thinking, fluency in mathematical equations and allow for the exploration of potential future job opportunities.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 36

My scholars LOVE Qubo! My first grade students are able to be immersed in hands on technology that increases their cooperation, critical thinking, inquiry and math skills. My second grade STEM group is a bit more advanced, creating complex sequences that allow for the snails to avoid obstacles. Since arrival I've seen a drastic increase in the love for math and science, as they are always eager to "bring out the snails". I offered only little instruction at the introduction, and have seen my scholars blossom as problem solvers not only with the coding but with other challenges they face in the classroom. I am honored that you selected myself and my scholars to benefit from your generous donation and thank you for making a difference in the future leaders of tomorrow.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The mission of PCSB schools is to prepare each student for college, career, and life. By engaging students in innovative science, technology, engineering and mathematics tasks students can become more prepared for our globally competitive society. The implementation of computer programming in my primary classroom at Starkey Elementary will increase student knowledge in the areas of; coding as a universal language, problem solving, computational thinking, fluency in mathematical equations and allow for the exploration of potential future job opportunities.

What will be done with my students

Students will have the ability to work in small teams to see how the fundamentals of coding can go from visual representation to basic programming as the robot moves across the game. Teams will be challenged to put together tiles to create a code for the Qobo Snail to complete using a scenario map. These teams will learn the basics of coding while at the same time, assess their knowledge by seeing how well Qobo completes the course while manipulating obstacles. Once the coding is understood, scholars can showcase their math knowledge by creating equations or comparisons within 20 for Qobo to travel. Teams will then enhance their communication and teamwork skills while sharing their successes, barriers that they experienced and any problem-solving tips for other teams to utilize.

Benefits to my students

Coding is collaborative, and creative! Qobo is designed to inspire students to continue learning how technology can solve real-world problems, enhance the quality of life and challenge them to think beyond their classroom walls. These coding activities will create and foster a love of computer science and life-long STEM learners! This provides opportunities for my students to conduct hands-on investigations, explore STEM careers and improve team building and leadership skills.

Describe the Students

We are a Title 1 school, with 100% of students receiving free breakfast and lunch. The school offers many after-school programs at no-cost due to the family’s inability to pay. My 2nd grade STEM Academy is a no-cost after-school program that is offered to all 2nd grade students with no academic or demographic requirements.

Budget Narrative

All monies collected will be used to purchase the technology resources.
