Goal

Improve differentiation and focus through headphones for one-to-one devices to build a solid academic foundation for our students.

What will be done with my students

Third grade students in Pinellas County have been lucky enough to gain access to one-to-one devices. However, headphones did not come with that. While we know headphones seem simple, it is an extra cost that many of our families cannot afford. We had some earbuds at school but many broke within days just because their quality was not great. We often need headphones because we use their devices for differentiation. While I am working with a group of students in math or science, there will be other students on their devices working on a mathematical concept that is specific to them. Whether that be intervention for a concept they didn't grasp yet, or enrichment for students working above grade level. This is the same for science.

Benefits to my students

Headphone usage allows all students the ability to have a higher level of engagement. In addition to focus, it prevents some embarrassment for some kids that may be re-learning a concept they didn't master yet. While we have worked very hard on having a growth mindset in our classes and we are accepting of all abilities, we don't want our students to have to think twice about their assigned task.

The other benefit of the headphones we are requesting is that they are a much better quality and we expect them to last this school year and beyond. We also like the idea of them being USB rather than the headphone jack. The headphone jack can break off very easy and the families are responsible for the cost of that repair. While they did agree to that in their paperwork for the laptop, we want to prevent any additional expenses for our families.

Describe the Students

Mrs. Newsome and I (Ms. Owen) team teach in a 3rd grade class at Frontier Elementary School. Our students attend a Title One school and many come from difficult backgrounds that even we as adults cannot imagine living through. They come to school every day and leave their baggage at the door, most of the time. Some days it's hard for them to do that and we guide them through those days the best we can. My class consists of kids already in the ESE program, in the process to become ESE for various reasons, kids that may be entering gifted and others who have struggled for years but don't qualify for ESE services. Some come from families who speak a language other than English at home. Others are students who deal with immense anger and haven't quite figured out how to manage it. Our classroom family is a beautiful mixture of students from all backgrounds and abilities and they learn to make it work better than many adults do in our society. We work together to challenge ourselves and learn something new everyday.

Budget Narrative

The headphones are $19.99 each through Amazon as of 9/28/21. I included tax as well but totally understand if that cannot be included. I calculated for 40 headphones as we would GREATLY appreciate a few extras in the event a couple break during the year. These headphones will remain at school and not transferred between school and home.
