Goal

The goal of this grant is to use the funds to purchase decodable readers to help my wonderful kindergarten students learn to read. These book will help to increase their academic performance now and in years to come.

What will be done with my students

Pinellas County Schools is using a new small group instructional model for reading. In the past we have strictly used guided reading books based on their reading level. With this new model, we are infusing decodable texts in our small group instruction to help students with sounding out words and to apply their letter sound knowledge. I will use the decodable books that I purchase with this grant in my reading groups and also allow the students to use these books in the reading baskets when they read independently.

Benefits to my students

The benefit to providing these books is that the scholars will be able to apply their letter/sound knowledge and learn to decode a text that uses the sounds they are learning. Decoding is one of the most important foundational skills that Kindergarten students learn and this not only helps while they are in kindergarten, but will follow them all the way through life, especially in the next few years of their education.

Describe the Students

I have 17 scholars that range from low performing to high performing. 16 of my 17 scholars are English Language Learners. They range from fluent bilingual to the beginning stages of language acquisition and speak no English. About 50% come from homes that have very little parent involvement because they are working multiple jobs to make ends meat.
