Goal

The goal of this project is to encourage creativity, innovation, and a growth mindset by engaging Melrose scholars with STEM activities in the Media Center's Makerspace area.

What will be done with my students

The scholars at Melrose Elementary come to the Media Center once a week. While here, they check out books and participate in Makerspace STEM activities such as engineering, coding, art, and creative ventures. Melrose is in need of more materials to enhance the Makerspace area. Scholars have the opportunity to use Keva planks to build projects, electronic mice to work on coding skills, microscopes to study science, 3D printers for engineering, and Osmo to build literacy and math skills. One of the most popular activities in Makerspace is the Lego center.

Benefits to my students

Makerspace activities have been shown to increase innovation, build problem solving skills, introduce scholars to potential career fields, and provide a creative outlet that leads to improved academic performance.

Describe the Students

The scholars at Melrose are hard working and resilient. Many scholars face the hardships of poverty, food insecurity, and unstable housing. We also have a high ESE population. The academic growth our scholars make each year shatter expectations.

Budget Narrative

The funds will be spent on Amazon to purpose Makerspace materials for the most popular activities. We will purchase magnatiles (engineering), Lego sets and tables (engineering), and coding robots (coding).
