Goal

My goal is to provide a rigorous, yet entertaining learning opportunity for my reading students through an in-depth novel study, allowing 100% of students to make gains in their understanding of the standards taught.

What will be done with my students

Students will conduct an in-depth novel study with a high interest book through a variety of whole group, partner collaboration, and individual activities. This will be used to reinforce and practice Florida Standards that they have already learned on Identifying Theme(s) and the Elements of Fiction as well as new standards being taught (Analyze how an author establishes and achieves purpose(s) through diction and syntax; Analyze how an author establishes and achieves purpose(s) through rhetorical appeals and/or figurative language). Once finished with the novel study, students will then watch the movie version of the story to conduct a multimedia compare and contrast of the 2 version of the tale.

Benefits to my students

This novel is a "timeless" tale that engages readers through captivating and relatable characters. The author's word choices and figurative language usage are a creative way to teach students how to have fun with words and self-expression. The embedded lesson being taught throughout the novel (themes) will provide students with the necessary opportunities to practice and understand an author's essential message(s) as well as reinforce the state standards expectations.

Describe the Students

I teach 3 reading classes at my school that consist of our Level 1 and 2 (as determined by the state FSA test) readers. Of my 45 registered students (grades 6, 7, and 8) to-date 26 have either an IEP (12 students), 504 (11 students), ELL (4 students - 2 of which are also ESE), and Gifted (1 student) designations. This means that they are all in need of additional help and guidance to aid their learning. My other 19 students are also struggling, and require help and motivation to keep the learning going. All students are in need of high-interest and engaging activities. I believe this unit will provide that, which in turn will allow me to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students.

Budget Narrative

I am in need of a set of 40 books, (I already have a small set to make up the difference) at a cost range of A$7.89 - $8.56 on Amazon. I am also in need of the Teacher's Guide ($12.99) to help provide me with insight for questioning and activities that best fit the novel. The last item I would need is a DVD ($9.99) version of the story for the multimedia comparison activity.
