Goal

My goal is to introduce a new and exciting intervention to motivate students with social and communication difficulties. Through these teachings, the students will be able to develop further awareness of their own thinking and social behavior and learn strategies to help them develop better self-regulation across a range of behaviors.

What will be done with my students

Most of us have developed our communication sense from birth onwards, but for many individuals this is not a natural process. These students need some additional strategies and support to meet the challenges of communicating and aciting appropriatley in social situations. To assist my students in overcoming the challenges that face them in this area, I would like to purchase” The Incredible Flexible You”, a Social Thinking curriculum to use with students in Pre-K through 5th grade. These resources will be used individually and in small groups to motivate the students to interact socially using their communication skills. The strategies implemented develop further awareness of the student’s thinking and social behavior. These strategies will assist the students to develop better self-reguation across a range of behaviors. The activities are engaging and follow a repetitive routine of activities to build on their social communication skills working in groups and interpreting verbal and nonverbal language to further understand the context of communication.
The benefit to the students is teaching them how their social mind works and how others may have different perceptions than theirs, how their behaviors affect the way others perceive them and respond to them and how to make this a more rewarding experience for everyone and finally how to better adapt and respond to the people and situations around them.

Benefits to my students

These students experience difficulty with communication which greatly impacts their learning and socailization along with having narrow interests, sometimes fixating on a single object or topic. Proven research has shown addressing the core symptoms: poor communication skills, obsessive and repetive routines and physical clumsiness is the ideal treatment. This can be achieved by building on the child’s interest, offer a predictable schedule, teach tasks as a series of simple steps, actively engaging the child’s attention in highly structured activities and provide regular reinforcement of behavior. As the Behavior Specialist, I work to provide my students and stafff with strategies that will assist the each and every student to be successful, not only in their class, but in the genereral education class and out in the community and beyond.
