Goal

An effort to help struggling students acquire the life-long skill of reading

What will be done with my students

Students will have electronic dictionaries as a means to access unknown words when reading and writing. Definitions of words become attainable and this tool is also invaluable when looking up words they may not know how to spell.

Students will also have a library of magazines to piqué their reading interest while providing a wealth of information in a teen friendly format.

Benefits to my students

Reading is a Life-long Skill
There are certain subjects in school that the question, "When am I ever going to use this?" is difficult to answer. Reading, however, is a skill that we use for the rest of our lives. Humans communicate primarily in two ways, the spoken word and the written word.
In our current digital age the manner in which the written word is presented may have changed, but the importance of being able to read remains the same. No matter what your profession is you have to be able to read to perform certain aspects of your job.
Reading is a skill that we use every day as a way to access information.
I teach reading in high school to 9th and 10th graders through a program called Read 180. This may be the last chance for many of the students to acquire this skill.
Students who don’t read well have a low vocabulary and, frankly, have difficulty looking up words in a dictionary. I am requesting electronic dictionaries. They make accessing the words easier and are also invaluable when looking up a word you may not know how to spell.
I am also requesting magazine subscriptions to pique the interest of the students.

Describe the Students

At least 50% of the students are ESE. Many others do not have a stable home environment or support system, which accounts for why they are so far behind their peers.

Budget Narrative

Descriptive of products:
Franklin MWD-465 Merriam-Webster Intermediate Dictionary with Spell Correction
The Franklin MWD-465 Merriam-Webster's Intermediate Dictionary with Spell Correction is the essential English reference for better reading, writing, and spelling! It includes 3 books with additional features: Merriam-Webster's Intermediate Dictionary with 274,000 definitions, Thesaurus with 500,000 synonyms and antonyms, patented phonetic spell correction, Confusables to distinguish commonly confused words, SAT and My Vocabulary lists, and learning exercises and games, as well as Crossword Puzzle Solver to determine missing puzzle letters. The MWD-465 also has an organizer that includes local and world clocks, personal databank, calculator, and currency and metric converters

I am also requesting three magazine subscriptions to pique the interest of the students. I have selected the following and provide a description of each:
TIME magazine has adapted well to technology advances rather than allowing other online news services to take over their market. Still providing in depth feature articles and reporting, TIME magazine richly covers topics from business to politics, the environment to social issues, and international relations to education. The articles are worthy of research for students and provide quality information to remain informed on the issues of the day.
MENTAL FLOSS is a fun magazine centered on bits of trivia, interesting facts and the types of content young hip teens are interested in. The magazine does not take itself too seriously, but contributes scientific, popular culture, and humanities trivia and articles of interest. On the website there are quizzes from listing the last ten Popes to the greatest football quarterbacks. Spinning the Globe offers fun geography and international facts that would apply to many types of curriculum.
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC is still one of the best informative magazines for education, as it provides a wealth of information in the area of international culture, environment, and animals. National Geographic stays contemporary by examining topics that are current from stories relating to the Keystone XL Pipeline to articles on big cat attacks.
