My class critically uses microphones for the audio portion of the READ 180 software. Every year, the county buys headphones with microphones that break often due to student wear and tear. I want to purchase separate plug in microphones because most students have their own head phones. Working microphones are critical to the success and implementation of my program. Also in my class, I have an audio book library. I do not currently have working CD players. I only have cd players that also have a radio. I want to purchase CD players without radios because the students sneak the radio and pretend they are listening to the audio book. Audio books help reluctant readers and readers who struggle with fluency or have specific language challenges, like ESL students or students with a stutter, etc. I also would like to purchase a battery charger and rechargeable batteries. Finally, I would like to purchase a power point slide show remote because we only have one per department. I use a slide show almost daily to enhance student achievement and understanding. My lesson is significantly stalled when I have to physically walk up to the computer each time I need to go to the next slide.

Goal

My class critically uses microphones for the audio portion of the READ 180 software. Every year, the county buys headphones with microphones that break often due to student wear and tear. What will be done with my students

Students will be able to use their own headphones and will have a separate microphone if they choose. Students will be able to utilize the audio books and we will have batteries that are rechargeable, so they will always be able to use the CD players and I will not have to worry or monitor that they are listening to the radio. Students will receive more enhanced visual instruction via PowerPoint without lag time for me to physically move to the front of the room to change slides. Students will have more time with direct instruction and assistance because I will be able to circulate more if I have a clicker for my technology and power points.

Benefits to my students

The Read 180 curriculum will work to enhance student learning. The district will save money because I will have rechargeable batteries. Behavior will improve due to less equipment issues and reluctant readers will have access to audio books to increase their interest in reading. The Read180 classroom will be fully utilized to enhance student achievement.

Describe the Students

My students are all the lowest readers in the school. Each student has earned a 1 or 2 on the FCAT. Many are ESE students and many are economically disadvantaged. Almost all are reluctant readers.

Budget Narrative

The microphones are 26.97 each and I am requesting 5. I currently have 7 computers, but the headphones are always an issue. Almost all of my students have their own headphones, but do not have their own microphones. When the microphones break on the headphones with mics, the headphones still work, so they increase the longevity of the headphones if I have separate microphones for students. The issue of lice can be addressed with students bringing their own headphones and providing separate microphones. The remote for my presentations is 29.99. We only have one per department and I have made a goal to give students a visual and sentence frames with each lesson. I am using a power point at least 4 days a week, but it takes time way from my circulation when I have to click enter on my computer to move forward on a slide. The CD players are 22.99 and I am requesting 3. My students are struggling readers and audio books increase interest and fluency. I am currently unable to allow students to use the audio books because the only working cd players I have, have a radio and very often these reluctant readers pretend to read, but listen to the radio instead. If I had CD players without this option, behavior would be much more productive and those reluctant readers would enjoy a book and fluency would increase as a result. The rechargeable batteries are a necessity because I do not have many plugs in my classroom and the cost of batteries to use the CD players is an obstacle. Rechargeable batteries would allow my students to utilize the audio books without costing the school, district or myself extra money. Also, students could sit in the comfy chairs or at their desk and listen to the audio books.
