Calvin Hunsinger is a school for students who have emotional and behavioral issues. Many of my students live chaotic lives and experience a great deal of turmoil. They are often impoverished. As a result, they frequently come to school unprepared to learn. For example, many of my students come to school in the winter without socks or with socks with huge holes in them, and they have been waiting outside in the cold for their bus. My goal is to provide these students with socks. My hope is that students who are better prepared, even just by having socks, will improve their behavior and increase the time they spend engaged in learning.

Goal

Calvin Hunsinger is a school for students who have emotional and behavioral issues. Many of my students live chaotic lives and experience a great deal of turmoil. They are often impoverished. As a result, they frequently come to school unprepared to learn. For example, many of my students come to school in the winter without socks or with socks with huge holes in them, and they have been waiting outside in the cold for their bus. My goal is to provide these students with socks. My hope is that students who are better prepared, even just by having socks, will improve their behavior and increase the time they spend engaged in learning.

What will be done with my students

The grant money would be used to purchase a variety of socks; i.e. long, short, black, white and colors, in sizes ranging from child to adult, since our school serves students in grades K-12. Socks would be given to students in obvious need, as well as given to our school Running Club members, as a way to provide socks to as many students as possible. Additionally, socks would be offered as behavioral incentives to those students who express interest.

Benefits to my students

The benefits would be many including clean, warm feet, a feeling that the people at school care about them, and hopefully improved behavior and increased learning.

Describe the Students

Many of my students are economically disadvantaged, demonstrate low academic performance, experience behavioral difficulties and mental health issues, and a significant number live in single parent families or with other guardians (i.e. grandparents). The majority of my students are on free/reduced lunch (over 90%) and my school is one that is receiving Universal Free Lunch. Hunsinger is a Title One School.

Budget Narrative

All of my grant money would be used to purchase socks in a variety of lengths and colors and in sizes child through adult, since my school serves kindergarten through 12th grade.
