Last year our program was able to purchase a 3D printer with generous grant from the Pinellas Education Foundation. It has proven such a useful and popular tool that we have used three spools of PLA filament (3 kgs). This is the material that the 3D printer prints with, and we would like to purchase more in an assortment of colors.

Goal

Last year our program was able to purchase a 3D printer with generous grant from the Pinellas Education Foundation. It has proven such a useful and popular tool that we have used three spools of PLA filament (3 kgs). This is the material that the 3D printer prints with, and we would like to purchase more in an assortment of colors.

What will be done with my students

One of the requirements of our Robotics 3 class is that every student designs a small object from scratch using a 3D CAD program (autodesk, solidworks, blender, sketchup) and then transfer that file to the MakerBot and print it. We also use the printer in the other classes, to print parts for class and projects, and for our three FTC robotics club teams. Because of all of this, we use about 3kgs a year, and are running out of our last supply.

Benefits to my students

My goal for the students is that they can continue using this resource as a class and club tool and as a motivation and inspiration for their learning.

Describe the Students

I teach at the Center for Advanced Technologies magnet at Lakewood High School. Lakewood is traditionally a Title 1 school. I teach 9-12 graders in a four year honors robotics program.

Budget Narrative

We would like to buy six spools of 3D printer PLA filament to restock our supply that we have used up in class projects.
