Goal

Students in multiple high school level science classes will explain and distinuish the specific properties of water which is a required standard of the curriculum in Biology, Integrated Science I/II, Marine Science, ACCESS Biology, and Physical Science (SC.912.L.18.12 - Discuss the special properties of water that contribute to Earth's suitability as an environment for life: cohesive behavior, ability to moderate temperature, expansion upon freezing, and versatility as a solvent).

What will be done with my students

Students will use magnetic water molecule kits as a hands on exploration of the specific properties of water. Students will use the model by manipulating the magnetic beads to symbolize hydrogen and oxygen molecules. The beads accurately reflect positive and negative changes and allow the students to feel the strength (strong vs weak) of hydrogen, ionic and covalent bonds. Discovering this property of water allows the students to recognize that water is a substance which displays properties not typically recognized as vital for life.

Extending beyond the molecular bonding, students will use Transformative Properties of Water Kit to explore and explain the specific properties of adhesion, cohesion and capillary action. Students will use information gained (science "sense making) from working with the material to explain the lattice framework of water when frozen and how this specific property of water explains why fish still live underneath a frozen pond and how that is just one example of a broad concept related to the properties of water that is essential for the ecosystem balance.

Students will also explore the property of surface tension and how this unique property of water allows certain insects to "walk on water" as well as allowing water to move up the xylem tissue of higher plants without seperating (moving up a plant's water column against the force of gravity). This property of water will be analyzed through use of a classroom hyrdoponics display which the students can observe and use to formulate scientific inferences.

Evaluating how all of the unique and specific properties of water work together for life through hands on activities as well as productive science discussion will assist the student in gaining rigorous and robust science knowledge.

Benefits to my students

Students have difficulty in conceptualizing complex high school science standards. Providing students with a hands-on manipulative will allow the students to work directly with the molecules (hydrogen and oxygen) that create water and will assist the students in visually and kinesthetically cementing the concepts related to hydrogen, ionic and covalent bonding as well as the properties of cohesion and adhesion.

Research shows that students involved in inquiry based lab experiences and research show a higher level of understanding and application of the information material. The provision of multiple sets of magnetic water molecule kits as a classroom activity will assist ESE students to visualize a complex concept that is not able to be viewed in the natural world without the use of models.

The magnetic water molecule kit is extremely durable and can be used for multiple years since it is not a consumable supply (can be stored and used repeatedly). Students can use the model kit for initial learning as well as remediation and review for summative assessments.

The Transformative Properties of Water Kit will allow the students to work with materials which will help to clarify the adhesion/cohesion, universal solvent and surface tension properties. By providing the students the opportunity to explore and learn through investigation and observation, the concepts will become visible and less conceptual. ESE students tend to have a higher level of difficulty with conceptual material so the addition of science models and observations assist in cementing the concept (SC.912.L.18.12 - Discuss the special properties of water that contribute to Earth's suitability as an environment for life: cohesive behavior, ability to moderate temperature, expansion upon freezing, and versatility as a solvent).

Describe the Students

All students are Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students. Students are Emotional-Behavioral Disorders, Other Health Impaired, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and/or School Based Mental Health. The students are served in an ESE center with 100% ESE population.

Students tend to be low performers in the traditional school setting. Students are staffed into the school through ESE Services with guardian approval. Low class ratio, social skills training infused throughout the day, weekly counseling and case management services assist the students to reduce behavioral concerns. Subject area teachers are dually certified with ESE certification in order to implement the most effective ESE classroom teaching strategies to help the students improve their subject understanding, knowledge base and show learning gains.

Students tend to be hands-on learners. They work best with materials that they can manipulate and work with through multiple scenarios. Students tend to be able to conceptualize the more rigorous high school science standards when they are engaged in hands on data collection and discovery.
