Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 21

My students became achievers and motivated learners. These STEM activities will allowed this to happen! It REALLY built confidence and allowed them to celebrate success!
This grant allowed my students 2 hours of STEM curriculum experiences and opportunities each week to explore things outside of basic math, science, social studies and reading and writing skills.
They became engineers and explored and problem solved the science behind circuitry.
They loved and looked forward to this time each week.  Working in small groups engaged them socially; building peer relationships and helped them problem solve and resolve any disagreements within their group as well as within our entire class. 

We became a strong team of compassionate, supportive, engaged and creative learners!

Unfortunately, our time with our circuitry kits was cut short due to the Corona Virus.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To introduce and explore students to electric traditional circuits and the alternative of green energy. I want them to explore using hands on activities the jobs of electrical engineers. 

 

What will be done with my students

I will have my students work in groups using 4 snap circuit kits. Once a week they will have a Stem lab where they will explore the why, how, what, when and where of electric circuitry, and alternatives of going green. They will work hands on, discovering, adjustable lighting, led displays, controllers, sound activated switches, fiber optics and lie detectors to name a few. As well as green alternatives like rechargeable batteries, and solar cells. These activities/explorations build a bridge that is connected to our current science standards, as well as some language arts and math standards. 

 

Benefits to my students

Most important I want students to be achievers and motivated learners. These STEM activities will allow that to happen!
I want my students to have many experiences and opportunities to explore things other than basic math, science, social studies and reading and writing skills.
I want them to explore what engineers do and know that their are many jobs to explore.
In addition I would like to start a STEM club after school with funding from Title 1 if possible using the same plan. This will reach all students k-5 at our school.  

 

Describe the Students

My second graders are Great children. They have various abilities that range from a K level of academic achievement in subject areas to as high as a 4th grade level in some areas. Since we are a Title 1 school we have many students who qualify for free or reduced lunch and all students can get a free breakfast.
Half of my students are performing below grade level in both Math and Language Arts (Reading & Writing). This grant will allow all students to have success! 

 

Budget Narrative

This project is just over the $1000.00 budget, but I do have other funds that I will use to purchase Journals and other supplies as needed.
The bulk of the cost for the STEM program is the purchase of these kits which I could not do with out the support from Jabil's $1000.00 grant.
