Goal

We call ourselves PEARLS. We are a girls' club, mentoring 4th and 5th grade young ladies. Our goal is to provide these lovely young ladies with self-esteem, pride, self awareness, friendship, respect, academics, all the qualities that they all deserve. We work to encourage them to be the very best they can and to give back to the community and those less fortunate. It is truly a wonderful experience for all of us!

What will be done with my students

PEARLs is a girl's club geared to 5th grade girls, but we also invite 4th grade girls to join. Our club meets every other week with life enriching lessons that are fun and fulfilling. We wear our special made T-shirts with pride to every meeting. It helps them have a personal connection into the club, and to feel special. They learn to take pride in being part of a group of girls who find love and support for each other. The girls feel special and are proud to be part of a group of girls and teachers who they can call their friends. The girls learn self-respect, self-esteem, etiquette, manners, being a friend, self-awareness, kindness, pride, diversity, tolerance, table setting, how to love themselves, their body changes, and all the fun and awareness about being a young lady. Many of these young ladies do not have the family dynamics to encourage them to be the best they can be now or in the future. We teach them to love themselves and to be kind to everyone. We teach them how important school is now and for the future. We teach them about themselves and their changing bodies. We teach them to give back to the community. We enlighten the girls about others who are less fortunate. The girls must do a service project throughout the year. The first one is a food drive that directly benefits the community that these girls live in. The girls run this service project by themselves. They learn to work with each other, to record food items, they deliver and stock shelves at the food pantry. They learn to give and to help people in need. They learn passion for people who are less fortunate.

We also love to incorporate the arts into the girls' lives. Many of them have never been to the theatre. We would once again like to fulfill this dream . Last year, some o fhte girls were actually in the performance, the girls were truly mesmerized by the experience. It was magical. We would love to again treat them to this special experience.

At our last meeting, the girls are treated to a beautiful banquet, donated by Olive Garden. The girls learn how to represent themselves as young ladies. They come to school dressed in fancy dresses. They get their hair and make-up done on this special day by teachers and volunteers. They each receive a bag of personal hygiene items and the 5th graders receive a beautiful porcelain teacup. To see these young girls transform into lovely young ladies is a beautiful experience for all involved. What we have started here is a life long mission for these special girls.

Benefits to my students

The benefit is for these young ladies to take with them all we have taught them about themselves, and for them to know that they can make a difference in their lives and others. We keep growing each year and it is hard to turn girls away. As mentors, we have learned a great from each and every girl that has been involved in our club. We are as grateful to them as they are to us. We are blessed with each girl and what they bring to PEARLS. Many of these girls come to us with little to no self-esteem, they leave with a smile, friendships and pride for themselves that last a lifetime. We have many girls come back to visit with goals and college aspirations that they would not have had otherwise. Throughout the year, the girls flourish with lessons about hygiene, school, kindness, friendship, we have a club chant, and our motto, thanks to Tim McGraw is to be Humble and Kind, something these girls did not know they were capable of.

Describe the Students

These girls are 4th and 5th grade girls who combined are low/high performers , ELL, ESE and Gen. Ed. students. The are 30 girls who are invited into the club. These girls all come from struggling hard-working families. Many of them do not have stable, secure family lives that help to boost their self-esteem or to help them become productive citizens. PEARLs is a place for them to go to be themselves where they are not judged or looked at for who they are or what they have. They are diverse in their own right and each one has something to offer to our club.

Budget Narrative

Our girls are from middle to low-socio economic families. They are a mixture of low to high academic performers. We typically choose young ladies who need guidance in self and body awareness, but we have been extending our membership to all girls. These beautiful young ladies lack the guidance to help boost them and build their self-esteem. Many of these girls do not have, or live with moms to help support their changing bodies, we jump in to guide them. The hygiene bags help the girls feel important and special, they are filled with; shampoo, conditioner, sanitary pads, hand cream, make-up bags, lip gloss, hand sanitizer, just to name a few things. The bags add up and become difficult to afford without the help of a grant. All of our PEARLs' girls receive a personalized gift bag, We take a field trip to a musical production that helps encourage and friendships that last forever.
