Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 300

Even though this school year did not end the way we had hoped, I am certain my students were positively impacted by this grant during a few short months they had with the materials. Students were engaged in spatial reasoning, divergent thinking, and building confidence through critical and creative thinking. They worked together in teams and constructed designs and intricate buildings and marble mazes. In theory, by the end of the school year, students would have increased their knowledge of engineering, science, math and technology as measured by an increase from 25% proficiency to 35% proficiency in Science as indicated through our school improvement plan. This increase in Science scores would have postively impacted our school grade. I am looking forward to a full year of exploring and creating and even further growth through the materials provided through this grant.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

By the end of the school year, students will increase their knowledge of engineering, science, math and technology as measured by an increase from 25% proficiency to 35% proficiency in Science as indicated through our school improvement plan. Through participating in test experiments students will work on spatial reasoning, divergent thinking, and building confidence through critical and creative thinking.

 

 

What will be done with my students

Through the gifted and talented program, students in the school will have opportunities to build, construct, and design while working on fine motor skills, hand eye coordination, and team building. By "going back to basics" students will engage in an unplugged experience and work together on engineering type tasks using KEVA blocks, Qba Maze Marble Runs, and thinking critically through Qbitz Extreme.  

 

Benefits to my students

Complex block play and highly engaging creative construction leads to high math scores and cognitive flexibility, which is the ability to quickly shift your focus from one relevant stimulus to another. The possibilities are endless and the encouragement of imaginative play is crucial to building the creativity in children at a young age.  

 

Describe the Students

My students are a part of the gifted and talented program at Gulfport Elementary. Gulfport is a Title 1 school with a 100% free and reduced lunch rate. Our school demographics are 68% Black, 10% Hispanic, 22% White, and 1% Asian. The students in this program are, in most cases, high performers needing additional creative and critical thinking tasks that align with 21st century thinking skills.
