Goal

With the addition of this amazing technology, my students will be able to experience a virtual world where they can design, and experience a virtual world before their eyes, and hopefully learn how to apply that to the world they live in.

What will be done with my students

The students will research what VR (virtual reality) is and then learn about its history, and how it has changed over time. VR could be listed as a STEM lesson, but there is so much more that it can and will cover. The students will learn about the economic impacts of VR and how it allows people to experience almost anything in a digital world, much more cost effective than trying to create a real structure. The students will learn to create their own VR surroundings, and then try to improve upon them. The hope is once they understand how the system works, then we can give them economic constraints, and a rubric to see if they can budget for their VR environment. (ex. they might create a VR store, and have to track expenses, and operating costs).

Benefits to my students

Our students are growing up in a world much different than any of us did, and anytime we can engage them with something new and exciting it seems to be a win, win. First it is a win for us as educators, as we are exposing students to something engaging, that the students are so excited about they want to use and learn about. Second it is a win for the students because they get to experience something, in this case VR, that they might not have any chance of experiencing outside of this lesson, as many families will never have the resources to allow their children to use this type of equipment.

Describe the Students

Our students come from many ethnic and economic backgrounds. We have students who are from married, divorced, and single parent families. We have students with different disabilities, but all eager to learn, and explore new things. We have a few students who are in the gifted and talented program, and we also have some students who receive ESE services, and will get special diplomas in the future. We are a perfect picture of a truly mixed level classroom.
