Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 300

I would like to thank you on behalf of our school for supporting us in securing a site license for More Starfall.  It is such an engaging program that covers so many subject areas.

At the beginning of the school year, this programs helped our kindergarten students gain computer skills such as point and click, utilizing a mouse vs. using your finger, learning the basics of how to access programs and so on.

Students in grades k-2 can use this on a daily basis.  It can be used to support what is being taught in the classroom as well as remedial support for those who need it.  It has the added feature of teaching them about money and the value of different coins.

Our kindergartners use what they have learned in More Starfall and apply it when playing in housekeeping.  They use that knowledge when they pretend to purchase food while another student runs the cash register.

I was able to purchase quality headphones for our classroom computers and Ipads.  Our classroom is a very busy and sometimes noisy place and the headphones will help those on computer hear only what they need to hear and not be distracted by others working nearby.  It also helps those working nearby stay focused on the task at hand since they won't hear the sound from the computer.  This means everyone in class is engaged in their work and not distracted by the work of others.

With Gratitude,

Mrs. Shields

Original Grant Overview

Goal

This project will introduce kindergarten students to the concept of financial literacy as they learn about different types of coins and counting money while increasing their math and technology skills.

What will be done with my students

This project will help our students learn about financial literacy. During our math time, we will be teaching our students about counting, identifying coins, shapes, addition and subtraction and many other math concepts. Our students will be given the opportunity to practice these skills on the computer using an educational program called MoreStarfall. Not only does this computer program support the kindergarten standards for math, it also supports our reading, writing and science standards.

Benefits to my students

This project will have many benefits for our kindergarten students as they begin their journey in education. We will have the opportunity to teach our young learners the foundations of financial literacy in an engaging and FUN way. This will give our students practice and time to interact with technology.
Our students will be given the chance to engage in FUN online games that will reinforce the skills being taught in our math curriculum. This added practice and motivation will increase engagement, decrease off task behavior and help our students have a better understanding of math concepts. Parents will be encouraged to have their children work on Starfall at home. This will increase parent involvement by giving parents information on ways to work with their child at home. It reinforces the math and technology standards we are teaching in school while giving them the chance to work on the math standards at home.
The site license we would like to purchase would make MoreStarfall accessible to every student in our school. Although the program is designed for grades K-2, there are many students in grades 3-5 who could use it for remedial support. For students who are just learning English, there are many games that would help them gain a better understanding of our language. Every computer on our campus would have this website on it. This program would be available on all or our iPads as well.
For my kindergarten students, the purchase of quality headphones would ensure that they will not be distracted while they are on the computer. They will be able to hear what is said on the computer while blocking out what is happening in the classroom.

Describe the Students

I have 20 wonderful, inquisitive, and energetic kindergartners. All of my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Five of my students receive special education services. For five of my students, English is not their first language. One fourth of my class just turned 5 in the summer. They learn best with hands on activities. Over half of my class is not meeting grade level expectations for our first grading cycle.

Budget Narrative

The funds from this project will be used to purchase a school-wide license for the website and app MoreStarfall. We would also be able to purchase quality headphones for our computers.
