Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 85

Thank you so much for your support! The students were so invested in our House system this year. We started the year with a "sorting ceremony" where the students were placed into their houses. Each teacher was Head of a house and we held monthly house meetings with our groups, allowing for students from different classes to interact. We had weekly contests for house points, as well as monthly winners! Students earned House points for outstanding work, showing House pride, and helping others out. They got to eat lunch with their houses, and even earned house points for the best behaved table. The students wore their House colors and "swag" with pride! We made a huge hallway display where we kept track of the house points for all to see. Students received lanyards that they wore everyday and pencils in their house color. They each got a t-shirt with their house crest on it as well! We intend on continuing the house system next year!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To Implement a House system in our 5th grade classrooms in order to increase student engagement.

What will be done with my students

Students will be sorted into house groups. They will earn points throughout the year for exemplary behavior, academics, and citizenship. Houses will work together, support each other, and engage in friendly competition throughout the year. Monthly celebrations will reward the leading houses. The house with the most points at the end of the year will earn the house cup. Students will receive T-shirts to wear on House Spirit Days and Field Days, as well as other house gear (wristbands, pencils, etc) to show their house pride throughout the year.

Benefits to my students

Students will learn to cooperate with others and support each other through a "family" dynamic. The house system will give our students a much needed emotional and academic support system. Students will be more engaged and enthusiastic about learning through the friendly competitions. Students will develop much needed character traits of respect, integrity, determination, and empathy.

Describe the Students

We are a Title I school. Our 5th grade consists of all types of students, including ESE, ELL, and Gifted students. We have 4 classes of 22 students each.
