Original Grant Overview

Goal

Empower students to become literacy leaders in our community and encourage a love for reading.

What will be done with my students

1. Students will self select books from the high interest, culturally diverse middle school level book list provided by the Project Lit Community.
2. Students will form small group 'book clubs" to read and discuss the titles they have selected with other students reading the same books.
3. Students will use the book discussions as a springboard to decide what kind of literacy community outreach project to fund.
4. Students will implement a business plan and develop a craft item that can be created in our maker-space lab to be sold at the school store or at parent night/community event.
4. Students will fund their outreach project using their profits.

Benefits to my students

Love of literacy
Recognize the value of service to the community
Improve the community they live in
Financial literacy -a basic understanding of budgeting, setting financial goals and what it takes to run a business,

Describe the Students

Majority of my students are from low-income households. Our school qualifies for 100% free lunch.
Over half of the students at my school score below average on state reading tests .

Budget Narrative

Books would be chosen from list by students and ordered from school board approved vendor at lowest possible rate.
Craft items are also dependent upon student choice.
Student choice is imperative to increasing their motivation.
