Goal

To increase my AVID students written understanding on the importance of college and career readiness through interactive peer tutoring and financial understanding with the purchase of large mobile magnetic double-sided whiteboards.

What will be done with my students

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an academic elective course that prepares my students for college readiness and success. I will work with my students to explore the importance of building career knowledge through study skills, collaboration and financial stability through weekly peer tutorial sessions. To ensure success of peer tutorial sessions, students will need large group whiteboards to display their growth of learning. While in peer groups, students will be encouraged to think of a question or concern they have about starting their college or career path. Each week my class will focus on
a building career knowledge goal based upon our current AVID topic. (Examples: What classes to take in high school? What grants can I apply for? How long will I be in college?) One student will be selected to share their ideas to the group and then the group will brainstorm ideas while the person presenting is writing down on the whiteboard. This will allow for all students in the group to visually see the question along with the many responses. At the end of each session, all students in my class will be able to walk around the classroom and see the different questions and their responses on all the group whiteboards. Additionally, students will engage in weekly activities centered around exploring college and career opportunities along with financial understanding that will be displayed on the different whiteboards. These will be done weekly for the entire school year.

Benefits to my students

Since whiteboard space in my classroom is almost non-existent, I would love to provide a space where each group can display their thoughts in a way that makes sense to them whether it's using magnets to display work or using dry erase markers. Students can wheel the boards away when they are done. I have found that over the years, when I ask my students to reflect in their journals, it doesn't matter the question, my students spend more time staring at me then writing. I want to change this. I need to increase my student's confidence in their written thinking. Having my students brainstorm ideas together in a group on a large whiteboard will allow for more thoughtful conversations and help to increase their written understanding. When my students can talk through their ideas and concerns, the more they can process their thoughts. Allowing the whiteboards to stay up for the entire class for all groups to see encourages more in-depth questions to be asked.

Describe the Students

My AVID students typically include students who would be the first in their family to attend college and are a member of a group underrepresented in college. My students have the desire to graduate high school however do not yet have the skills needed to make this happen. They are also determined to attend college, have a good attendance record and have the willingness to undertake demanding preparation for college or a career of their choice.

Budget Narrative

I would like to purchase six large mobile magnetic double-sided whiteboards, one for each of my six groups. I would also like to purchase dry erase markers and erasers so my students can white and erase on the boards.
