Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 90

The kindergarten students at Westgate Elementary have been impacted in so many positive ways thanks to this grant opportunity.  From the beginning we got the students to be excited by showing them different STEM materials for our classroom and letting them give us feedback what they thought would be great in the classroom.  Then the boxes started being deliveerd and believe me it was like Santa dropping off supplies in the room.  The STEM manipulatives we have purchased for our classrooms are very popular.  The kids in class always choose to use them instead of traditional play items.  Not to mention when we get them out for a STEM lesson.  Just this week I told my kids we were doing a STEM project and the class erupted with cheer.  I read them a book about building designs (on a kindergarten level of course) and then the kids planned what kind of building they would build.  Then the kids built it using any of the STEM materials.  It was awesome seeing the kids work together, try, fail, and try again.  The great news about the materials we purchased is that they are non-consumable, so we will be able to use them with students for years to come.  I attached a few pictures I hope you can tell how happy these kids are.  Thank you so much!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our goal at Westgate Elementary Kindergarten is to enrich our curriculum with STEM projects. While we have attempted to do this already we are finding we have lots of great ideas, but we don't have the materials to execute them.

What will be done with my students

Students will use Stem manipulatives to enrich our curriculum. For example, if we are reading the three billy goats gruff the children will design and build a bridge for the billy goats to cross. If we are working with shapes students will use the manipilatives to create the shapes. Since we are planning on buying manipulatives that are not consumable we will be be able to use these for multiple years, not just one year. We also need individual pencil boxes. The Individual Pencil Boxes which the kids will be calling STEM Boxes will need to be top of the line as the kids will be using them often, and as we know kindergarteners need sturdy materials.

Benefits to my students

The students will be able to enrich their thinking though hands on stem manipulatives. The students will benefit in so many ways. They get to practice team work, planning, problem solving, and cause and effect to name a few. The kindergarten teachers at Westgate are committed to giving our students a quality education through all avenues of learning.

Describe the Students

The kindergarten classes at Westgate are comprised of a diverse group of students. We are a title 1 school so most of our students come from low socioeconomic status. We have students who don't speak English, we have students who are ESE (Speech, academic, and behavior). We also have students that range from low performing to high performing. But most importantly we have students who are eager to learn and using STEM will inspire their learning even more!

Budget Narrative

We are seeking funding for STEM materials for five kindergarten classrooms. 1000 dollars for each classroom.
