# of Students Impacted: 25

The Girlfriends of Melrose Elementary and The Girlfriends of Fairmount Park Elementary teamed together and attended the University of Floirida's College of Education on Monday, February 18th! They had an education library tour and 3D printer presentation, a session with college advisors and with the college of education facility, a walking tour of the campus, and they visited a science class, they had a UFLI/American Reads demonstration, and they were able to interact with the college students. It was an educational experience for sure.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of the “Girlfriends College Trip- University of Florida” is to provide our scholars with opportunities to enhance skills currently in their possession and to develop skillsets that will prepare them for post-secondary education. The main objectives include: 1. Scholars will aspire to a lifelong path toward higher education and deeper learning that ends with a degree. 2. Scholars will further consider education related degrees. 3. Scholars will be prepared for college and career readiness.

What will be done with my students

Scholars will tour the facility, receive an info session about their education degrees and programs that they can apply to in college , converse with current college scholars, and have lunch on campus. Scholars will learn about the Anita Zucker Center for Early Childhood Studies, they will visit UF's school of Teaching & Learning, and they will complete a checklist for the admission process into the University of Florida.

Benefits to my students

This college tour seeks to create an affinity for post-secondary education for scholars who are underrepresented, economically disadvantaged, and or would be first-generation college students. Many of our scholars want to be educators but they do not know the educational experience that is required to obtain that goal. With this trip, the girls will see the programs offered first hand, have conversations with young adults entering into the educational field, and they will learn what UF has to offer such as their research lab, the Anita Zucker Center which focuses on early childhood studies. This trip will motivate the girls by giving them hands on experience and a better understanding of college and career readiness.

Describe the Students

Melrose Elementary School has over 400 scholars, of which 100 percent are economically disadvantaged. Melrose is also a Title 1 school.
